SRAM components: how to choose groupsets and spare parts

SRAM was founded in Chicago, in the United States, and made its name with the Grip Shift twist shifter. Today it produces drivetrains and brakes for road, gravel and mountain bikes. Its best-known families include RED, Force, Rival and Apex for road and gravel, and Eagle for MTB. AXS identifies the wireless electronic system that allows compatible components to be managed and customised.

The Evolution Bikes catalogue includes chainrings, cassettes, chains, shifters, cranksets and bottom brackets, as well as rotors and disc brake spare parts. To choose a spare part, start with the code on the component fitted: the SRAM name alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

Road and gravel: start with the fitted drivetrain

RED, Force and Rival belong to families that differ in materials, weight and equipment. When replacing a component, identifying its generation and standard matters most. Available products include RED, Force and Rival cassettes, Force eTap AXS HRD shifters and the PC RED 22 chain.

  • Cassette: check the number of speeds, tooth counts, rear derailleur capacity and wheel's freehub body. The Force XG 1270 D1 cassette requires an XDR freehub body.
  • Chain: choose the family specified for the drivetrain. Flattop road chains and Eagle chains are not automatically interchangeable.
  • Electronic shifters: check system compatibility and the accessories required. You will also find the SRAM eTap AXS battery for derailleurs and Wireless Blips.

MTB: distinguishing between Eagle and T-Type

For a traditional Eagle drivetrain, the GX Eagle XG-1275 cassette requires an XD freehub body. The GX T-Type Eagle AXS Transmission groupset belongs to the Transmission system: before buying, check the frame's compatibility with the intended mounting arrangement. The presence of the Eagle designation on two components does not guarantee that they can work together.

Cranksets and bottom brackets also require attention: DUB indicates the axle standard, but you must also check the frame's bottom bracket shell and crankset version. For rotors and brake spare parts, check the brake system model, mounting type and required size.

Evolution Bikes is a family-run shop near Caserta, with three generations of experience, a workshop, bike fitting and e-bike support. To choose a compatible SRAM component, ask us for advice in store or via chat, providing the bike model and the codes on the fitted parts.

Frequently asked questions

Is SRAM an American brand?

Yes, SRAM is a US brand founded in Chicago. It produces drivetrains, brakes and components for road, gravel and MTB bikes.

What is the difference between SRAM RED, Force and Rival?

They are component families that differ in materials, weight and equipment. To choose or replace a part, you must also check the generation, number of speeds and drivetrain compatibility.

Which SRAM chain should I choose?

You need the drivetrain code and the number of speeds. Choosing a chain with the same number of speeds is not enough: also check the required family and standard.

Do you have spare parts for a SRAM RED 10-speed rear derailleur?

Availability must be checked for the specific spare part. Give us the rear derailleur code and the part to be replaced, or show us a photo, so we can check compatibility and availability.

Are SRAM Eagle and T-Type compatible?

Compatibility depends on the individual components. T-Type identifies the Eagle Transmission system: before buying, check the drivetrain, chain, cassette and frame compatibility.

What is needed to switch to a SRAM AXS electronic rear derailleur?

The entire system must be checked: shifters, rear derailleur, drivetrain, battery and, for some configurations, frame and wheel. An electronic rear derailleur alone does not make the existing groupset compatible.
