What WaveCel is:

WaveCel is a compressible cellular material that lines the inside of Bontrager WaveCel helmets.

It is the result of a four-year collaboration between Trek’s research and design teams, orthopedic surgeon Steve Madey, and biomechanical engineer Michael Bottlang. Doctors Madey and Bottlang have collaborated for the past 25 years as pioneers in the treatment of fractures, thoracic and pelvic trauma, and the prevention of head injuries. They are funded by the National Institute of Health to prevent brain injuries among cyclists.

How it works:
Unlike regular foam helmets designed to protect against direct impacts, WaveCel takes into account how most cycling accidents occur—chaotically, with twisting, bending, and angled impacts.

WaveCel absorbs energy in several ways. Upon impact, the layers of WaveCel material move independently and bend until the cell walls compress and slide, absorbing both direct and rotational energy and diverting it away from the head.

This three-stage change in the material’s structure (bending, compression, sliding) is highly effective at dispersing impact energy. WaveCel prevents concussions in typical cycling accidents nearly 99 times out of 100.*

*Results based on AIS 2 Injury (BriC) tests at 6.2 m/s with a 45° angle comparing a standard EPS helmet with the same helmet modified with a WaveCel insert, as detailed in the paper "Comparison of Bicycle Helmet Technology in Realistic Oblique Impacts."
