How to choose tubeless sealant for MTB and road bikes

Tubeless sealant helps maintain an airtight tyre and seal small punctures during use. The best sealant for your bike depends on tyre compatibility, operating pressures and the manufacturer's guidance. No sealant can repair every cut.

For MTB, gravel and road bikes, check that the formula suits the discipline and intended pressures. Also check compatibility with tyre, rim and tape materials. The term “latex” is often used to refer to tubeless sealants, but formulas can differ: always read the product information.

  • Use and compatibility: choose a sealant stated to be suitable for your tubeless system. An inner tube product has a different intended use.
  • Amount to add: depends on tyre volume and the manufacturer's instructions. A wide MTB tyre generally requires more liquid than a road tyre.
  • Bottle size: a small pack can be practical for occasional use; a one-litre size is useful if you maintain several wheels or top up frequently.
  • Maintenance: check the remaining liquid periodically. Heat, use and storage conditions can affect how long it lasts.

Available brands include Joe’s No-Flats, DR BIKE-CICLO, Officine Parolin, Schwalbe, Finish Line and Effetto Mariposa. To compare pack sizes, you can start with Joe’s tubeless sealant in 1000 ml and Finish Line FiberLink in 240 ml, checking their respective usage instructions.

If you are looking for a MTB sealant kit, check what your setup requires: in addition to sealant, you may need compatible tubeless tape and tubeless valves. Avoid mixing different formulas without explicit guidance from the manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tubeless sealant for MTB?

The choice depends on your tyres, operating pressures and the manufacturer's guidance. Check compatibility, recommended quantity and required maintenance before choosing.

How much sealant should I put in tubeless tyres?

The amount depends on tyre volume and the sealant you choose. Follow the quantities specified by the manufacturer: bottle volume does not correspond to the amount to pour into each wheel.

How often should tubeless sealant be topped up?

There is no single interval for all products. Check periodically that the sealant is still liquid and follow the manufacturer's guidance, also considering climate and use.

Is MTB sealant also suitable for road bikes?

Only if the manufacturer states that it is compatible with road bike tyres and pressures. The tubeless label alone is not enough to establish this.

Can I use inner tube sealant in tubeless tyres?

Do not assume so: products can have different formulations and intended uses. Use a sealant expressly specified for your system.

Can I mix two different tubeless sealants?

Avoid mixing them unless the manufacturers confirm compatibility. When changing formula, follow the instructions for removing the old sealant and preparing the tyre.
